Calling all REBELS to fight for uncensored, free speech news at KPFK 90.7 FM Radio
Save Rebel Alliance News from Censorship
Los Angeles – Nov 15, 2024 – In an unprecedented and unacceptable move, KPFK General Manager Michael Novick has taken the daily KPFK flagship Rebel Alliance News (RAN) off the air last Friday (11/8). Novick did not consult with the editors before the move but instead sent out a mass email to the KPFK membership, badmouthing the show and discrediting it publicly.
The conflict erupted when a personal friend of Novick engaged in sexual harassment of News Team members. Instead of responding to the harassment as legally required, Novick immediately cancelled the show.
He then went on the air just before 6pm on Friday and claimed wrongfully that the News Team at RAN were infighting and unable to work together. In a public betrayal of the entire news crew, he stated on the air that the news will be going on “a hiatus indefinitely” after not meeting standards of KPFK and journalism, of the Pacifica Mission and their obligations to the community”.
RAN has NEVER violated the FCC rules. The show is in full compliance with the mission statement and follows high journalistic standards, as many of our listeners have confirmed in their emails, donations and calls over the years. It’s creator is a veteran journalist of 30 years who worked for outlets like the BBC, Reuters and Agency France Press, before leaving corporate media and focusing on alternative news outlets.
Ever since Novick took RAN off the air, he has played a mish mash of poorly produced, non-local news during the crucial post-election evening news slot, when our listeners urgently need news and analysis. He has no plan nor resources for producing another local news cast of RAN caliber, nor an alternative team to do it. Few professional journalists are willing to work for free, without even being given any tech support.
Rebel Alliance News has grown since its inception 2 years ago into a team of 20 (mostly younger) contributors and host, working as a collective. The show has been praised in countless emails to its editors and to management. At the Local Station Board meeting two days after the suspension, an unusual number of listeners showed up demanding to immediately reinstate RAN.
The will of the listeners has been clearly expressed on multiple platforms. Why is Novick not listening to the listenership of this public non-profit station? Is he the only one to define what is News in the 21st century? Why is he fighting the much needed rejuvenation of KPFK? The average age of broadcasters and Local Station Board members at KPFK is in the 70s. Ideas and concerns of younger audiences are being brushed aside.
Please tell management to reinstate Rebel Alliance News on the air IMMEDIATELY by emailing

KPFK’s Rebel Alliance News was started by Ziri Rideaux at the end of November 2022 to provide cutting-edge, progressive news covering local, domestic and international issues that are censored or disregarded in mainstream media. The news collective now includes over 20 volunteers providing news, commentary, analysis and community calendar tips. The hour-long daily evening newscast is produced locally with international, national and state inputs but a strong dose of the beats that are shaping life in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, with periodic reports from Orange County, Long Beach, the Inland Empire, Ventura/Santa Barbara and San Diego. This is an all volunteer news-gathering, editing and broadcast operation, Monday through Friday at 6 PM, complete with commentaries and cultural coverage and your audio letters to the editors.
